Suspected drunk driver who was four times over limit ran from police after A1 crash

The crash happened this morning.

The driver involved in a crash on the A1 near Fort Kinnaird this morning has been arrested for drink-driving.

Both the driver and passenger ran from the scene of the crash, but were caught by police on foot.

The 43-year-old man driving was arrested after giving a breath test of 98, more than four times over the legal alcohol limit for driving.

The incident occurred on the A1 between the Edinburgh City Bypass and the Newcraighall Junction during rush hour this morning.

Nobody was injured.

Scottish Road Police wrote on Twitter: "#EdinburghRP attended a one vehicle collision on the A1 this morning.

"The driver and passenger fled on foot, but following a short foot pursuit were apprehended.

"The driver provided a roadside breath test reading of 98, was arrested and now undergoing further station procedures."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police in Edinburgh have arrested and charged a 43-year-old man in connection with road traffic offences following a crash on the A1 near Fort Kinnaird retail park which happened at around 7.40am today (Thursday, 9 January). Nobody was injured.

"The man is expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday, 10 January."
