Woman faces jail after pushing her ex under bus in Leith

Margaret Ramsay flew into a rage with former partner Dean Barrow before dragging him into Leith Walk and pushing him on the body, causing him to be struck by the passing double decker.

Barrow bounced off the windscreen of the Lothian Buses vehicle and landed in the middle of the road around 15 feet away.

Ramsay then marched over to the prone man and began shouting and swearing in his face as he lay on the roadway.

Passers-by managed to then pull her away before police arrived and she was arrested.

Ramsay, 27, was due to stand trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday, but changed her plea to guilty to an amended assault charge moments before the trial was due to start.

Not-guilty pleas to knife possession and breaking a court order were accepted by the Crown.

Fiscal depute Aidan Higgins told the court Ramsay had been previously banned from contacting or approaching Barrow following a court order in 2014.

But violence erupted when Barrow came across Ramsay around 7.10pm on October 3 last year.

Mr Higgins said: “Mr Barrow approached her and she started arguing with him.

“They each shouted at the other but as they stood on the pavement the accused took hold of Dean Barrow by the body and dragged him off the pavement and into the roadway.

“On the roadway she pushed him on the body away from herself causing him to be struck by a bus coming towards him.”

A shaken Barrow managed to make his way back on to the pavement and subsequently refused any medical help.

Defence solicitor Emma Fleming said the couple had been in an on-off relationship for ten years.

Sheriff Michael O’Grady QC deferred sentence to September for the preparation of reports. Ramsay, from Moredun, pleaded guilty to assaulting Barrow by taking hold of his body and dragging him off the pavement, pulling him on to the roadway and pushing him, causing him to be struck by a moving bus on Leith Walk.
