Cyclists ride in memory of the International Brigade

a TEAM of cyclists was due to set off this morning on a ride to commemorate the efforts of the International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War.

The National Clarion Cycling Club 1895 set off from the International Brigade memorial on the Mound to visit memorials in Glasgow, Dublin, Cardiff, Bristol, Swindon and Reading.

They will arrive in London on September 30 for the AGM of the International Brigade Memorial Trust on October 1 and the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street the following day.

The ride start was due to be attended by Councillor Andrew Burns, who said: “It is appropriate that the Clarion Cyclists 1895 have chosen Edinburgh to start their UK tour of International Brigade memorials.

“Labour councillor Tom Murray and future Labour councillor Donald Renton both served in the International Brigade. As a fellow cyclist it is a real pleasure to send off these doubly dedicated cyclists.”
