The incident took place between 8.30pm and 8.45pm on Friday 26 February at an address in Mayfield Avenue.

A 41-year-old man was delivering a takeaway in the area when a male in the company of a young child approached and became abusive towards him.

The victim attempted to return to his vehicle but was followed by the male, who stole the takeaway and assaulted him.

Local officers are now urging anyone who can assist with their inquiries to trace the suspect to come forward.

He is described as being white, 5ft 4ins tall and wearing dark clothing.

Constable Donald Kettrick from Musselburgh Police Station said: “Thankfully, the victim did not sustain any serious injury, but was understandably distressed at being attacked while simply doing his job.

“This incident was made all the more serious due to the fact the suspect had a child in his care during the assault and anyone who can help us identify this male is asked to contact police immediately.

“We’re also urging anyone who saw the attack take place to get in touch. In particular, we are eager to trace the driver of a dark-coloured Audi who stopped and spoke to the victim at the scene.”

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or make an anonymous report through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
