Driver arrested after woman killed in York

A MIDLOTHIAN man has been arrested for causing death by careless driving after a woman was knocked over and killed in York.

The 56-year-old man from Penicuik, who has not been named by police, was detained following the collision which happened at around 8.40pm on Tuesday. He was released on bail to allow for further police enquiries, and is set to appear in court on May 11.

The 38-year-old woman, who was from York, was walking along the road between the city’s Bumper Castle pub and a level crossing on Wigginton Road when she was struck by a blue Renault Laguna.

She was taken to York District Hospital, where she died later the same evening. A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “We are not yet in a position to release her identity.”
