Detectives detained two 16-year-old boys and charged them in connection with the incident. Both teenagers are to appear in court at a later date.

The phone was found in a shop in the Gilmerton area.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Cunningham said: “This investigation was undertaken by officers as part of Operation Arable – an ongoing campaign to tackle street crime.

“Thankfully, the phone was quickly recovered and as part of our intelligence gathering inquiries, we are carrying out more work in relation to the store where it was traced.”
