Edinburgh beer garden with ‘exceptional views’ named one of UK’s best
The Big 7 Enjoy Travel rankings named Cold Town House in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket as one of the UK’s best beer gardens thanks to its “exceptional views” and “perfect backdrop” of Edinburgh Castle.
The rankings, which take in beer gardens in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, score the outdoor drinking areas based on views, atmosphere, food and drink, outdoor space and standout features.
Reviewing the Grassmarket beer garden, Enjoy Travel said: “If you’re a lover of a beer garden with exceptional views, then you need to visit Cold Town House in Edinburgh.
“Found in the Grassmarket area of the Scottish capital’s Old Town, the views from Cold Town House mean that you’re steeped in history everywhere you look.
“And to top it all off, Edinburgh Castle itself intimidatingly looms over the scene, offering the perfect backdrop to an incredibly historic pub.”
The Clachaig Inn in Glencoe and The Old Mill Inn in Pitlochry came in at number one and number two respectively, giving a strong showing for Scottish beer gardens. Lake View Garden Bar, in the Lake District, narrowly edged Cold Town House out of the top three.
The Grassmarket brewery and bar has become a popular spot in Edinburgh since opening in 2019. Known for its on-site brewery and pizzas, the beer garden has rightfully been recognised for its stunning Edinburgh Castle backdrop.
It re-opened its beer garden in April after a £500k refurbishment that added a retractable roof, new bar and terrace layout, as well as a showstopping design glow up.
The retractable, transparent roof structure allows up to 100 guests to enjoy social gatherings with a castle view in all weathers. The specially engineered structure is UV-protected, providing natural daylight, whilst offering shelter from the wind and rain.
