Edinburgh Fashion Week: Salvation Army showcases pre-loved looks

MEET the city worker bidding to put a touch of haute couture into the Capital's charity shop scene.

Julia Carruthers, manager of the Salvation Army’s boutique store in Bruntsfield Place, has curated a collection of “pre-loved” fashion items for a show taking place in the City Chambers.

Her collection will be displayed on Saturday, as this year’s Edinburgh Fashion Week draws to a close.

A talented designer in her own right, Julia was approached by a group of students from Edinburgh College, which is hosting the event.

Putting her expertise in charity and sustainable fashion to use, she has created over 30 looks from the Salvation Army boutique’s stock.

She said being asked to take part was hugely exciting.

“I have long been a champion for sustainable fashion and charity shops, and it’s brilliant to be able to showcase a collection of our favourite items in the heart of Edinburgh,” she said.

“I’ve spent weeks and weeks on the collection, making sure to include unique looks for a range of occasions, but importantly, including outfits that are great quality and affordable.

“Charity shops are not only a source of hidden gems for bargain hunters, but I also truly believe we should all shop with more of a conscience – whether that’s buying second-hand, donating clothes rather than binning them, or making clothes last longer. The bonus with charity shops is that you can help raise money for a good cause.”

The charity fashion show project is being overseen by four event management students – Tyler Norrie, Charlotte Heard, Alicia McKellar and Heather Quinn – who are based at Edinburgh College.

Ms Carruthers’ design contribution was today hailed by leaders at the Salvation Army.

Nick Morton, head of retail development for the organisation, said: “We’re delighted with the way she’s engaged with the community in Bruntsfield, as well as wider Edinburgh. It’s testament to her commitment that the Salvation Army is out there on Saturday, taking part in a charity fashion show in City Chambers, in the heart of the city.”
