The new bin, near Victoria Street, was installed by the Grassmarket Neat Streets initiative, an ongoing collaborative clean-up campaign launched earlier this year.

The group is also behind the popular “cigarette ballot bins”, which recently asked the city’s smokers to vote for their favourite Trainspotting character by placing their cigarette ends in different slots.

Throughout August, anyone who recycles their Festival leaflets using the new bin will be entered into a prize draw to win vouchers for local businesses.

All entrants have to do is snap a picture of themselves using the bin and post it on social media using the hashtag #NeatStreets and tagging in @CleanUpScotland or @KSBScotland.

Carole Noble, operations director at Keep Scotland Beautiful – which is part of the Neat Streets drive – said: “The Edinburgh Festival brings huge economic, tourism and promotional benefits to Edinburgh as a city and we are pleased that initiatives such as the Neat Streets campaign are helping to encourage visitors to dispose of their litter responsibly.

“I hope that the Grassmarket Neat Streets leaflet litter bin helps to capture the attention of a worldwide audience and motivate visitors and residents to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.”

Bosses said the Neat Streets campaign would continue to explore innovative ways to reduce all litter types in the Grassmarket until October.
