But if it’s affluence you want, then you need only look as far as the West End.

The Chester Residence in Rothesay Place has landed yet another claim to fame – finishing second in the luxury category at TripAdvisor’s annual Travellers’ Choice Awards.

And not only has it wooed visitors from across the UK, but it has also been named 11th in the European list.

The five-star serviced apartments – starting at £150 for one night – have won multiple accolades in recent times, including a Scottish Hotel of the Year award.

Graham Wood, owner of the Georgian townhouse, said: “We are really delighted to be recognised by our guests in the TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards 2016.

“This is a fantastic achievement and recognises our team’s efforts in ensuring each guest has an enjoyable and luxurious stay.

“Getting to know each of our guests and offering a personal service, without being intrusive, is key to creating a memorable experience.”

The rankings are based on feedback and reviews from travellers, who share their experiences on the Trip Advisor website.

One visitor, from the Netherlands, wrote: “This is one of the best and most beautiful hotels I ever stayed at.

“The hotel rooms are actually small apartments, all decorated in tasteful style.

“The staff is one of the kindest ever, nothing is too much and they try their best to find all the information you are looking for.”

Another visitor, from Brighton, said: “We stayed for three nights during the Edinburgh Festival in August 2015.

“The apartment on the top floor was beautifully appointed, the bathroom was amazing. The staff were pleasant and attentive. Couldn’t ask for anything more.

“Expensive, but worth every penny. Hope to return one day.”

Prestonfield House came 15th place in the UK for luxury, as ten hotels across Scotland were honoured across five categories. Pitlochry’s Atholl Villa won the most awards.

James Kay, TripAdvisor spokesman, said: “Demand for rooms at the winning Scottish hotels is likely to rise, so travellers should book early on TripAdvisor to see for themselves why travellers have raved so much about these properties.”

Tourism chiefs at Visit Scotland said the Chester Residence’s most recent success was well deserved.

A spokesman said: “This is wonderful news for The Chester Residence.

“It seems apt that in this year of innovation, architecture and design that one of Scotland’s most luxury hotels in our capital city should once again feature so prominently in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice

“This accolade will add to the growing list of awards The Chester Residence has received since opening in 2006, including being a regional finalist at our very own Scottish Thistle Awards in November.

“Congratulations to all of the team.”

The £510 per night Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur in India was won the Travellers’ Choice Award, beating off competition from the Shinta Mani Resort in Cambodia and the Bellevue Syrene in Sorrento, Italy.
