Forecasters have issued a yellow weather alert for the Capital and warned the city would experience an onslaught of “wintry conditions” on Wednesday.

But a Met Office spokesman said Edinburgh’s sheltered position could mean it escapes the worst of the conditions.

He added: “There’s a potential for sleet and snow over higher ground, with hail overnight into Wednesday.

“It’s going to be pretty windy indeed, with gusts of over 60 or 70mph possible on the coast. Edinburgh is slightly more sheltered, but it will still be very windy.”

And with temperatures expected to plummet on Friday night and into the weekend, forecasters have warned some rural areas could even see snow settling on the ground.

The spokesman added: “As we go into Friday, there will be less rain and so it will probably stay dry and cloudy.

“But Friday night into Saturday could see some pretty cold temperature overnight.

“In Edinburgh itself, I don’t think we are going to see settled snow, but on higher ground we could.”
