Street of Light opens between 1pm and 5pm on the opener, and at 6pm and 8pm every evening after that.

Charlie Wood, of Edinburgh’s Christmas, said: “It’s no accident that Christmas in the northern hemisphere is celebrated at one of the darkest times of year. The dark nights are the best time to celebrate light and the warmth it brings. Last year we introduced Street of Light to Edinburgh’s Christmas to do just that and it was great to see the joy that it brought to the hundreds of thousands of people who came to see it.

“This year, we’re hoping for an event better second album: in a new and bigger location, and for more dates, allowing for a larger audience and to spread the benefits to Edinburgh’s New Town. We’ve a terrific line up of musicians to bring the street to life, including Tigerstyle whose bhangra will also celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. We hope residents and visitors will snap up the opportunity to be at the heart of this world class sound and light spectacular.”

The Scottish Market with everything from local produce stalls to Scottish artists and craftsmen selling their wares, moves next to Street of Light, and opens November 26.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Edinburgh’s Festivals and Events Champion, said: “The Street of Light was a fantastic success last year so it is great to see its return, this time to George Street, which will help promote the street’s west end to even more people throughout the festive season.

“Edinburgh’s Christmas promises to wow once again, and the Street of Light is a spectacular and mesmerising addition to what is already a brilliant line-up.”

Last year’s spectacular was all about spectating, this year it’s about getting everyone singing and dancing with music from local choirs and bands.

The lights will be switched on at 3pm to light up George Street.

But at 6pm and 8pm each day the Street of Light will come alive with music and lights as the Edinburgh Festival Chorus and Scottish Chamber Orchestra perform a selection of traditional Scottish favourites to bring a smile and get toes tapping before breaking into a series of festive favourites.

Tickets are available at www.edinburghschristmas.com from 12 noon today.
