Edinburgh's Grassmarket closed due to property fire with emergency services on the scene

Emergency services descended on Edinburgh’s Grassmarket as fire crews battled a blaze at a flat.

The fire broke out in a flat on Heriot Bridge, near the Apex hotel, at around 10.30am and was extinguished a short time later.

The road was closed to traffic for around an hour and Police Scotland urged members of the public to avoid the area during that time.

Speaking at around 11am, a witness said: “There’s a really high police and ambulance presence. There are maybe four ambulances and three fire engines.
