Why Amazon must take action to reduce its packaging – Hayley Matthews

Amazon purchases often arrive in a box inside a box and it’s just too wasteful, writes Hayley Matthews.

When I had a slight panic about the loo roll thing earlier in the week (admittedly I went for the hippy choice and ordered the cheapest stuff – the kind that your fingers go through) I couldn’t help notice that Amazon like to have their packaging all uniform, looking the same and branded with their logo.

But to do this the stuff you order is often double boxed. It really isn’t doing the environment any good and it’s such a shame just how much of the packaging goes to waste. It also makes no sense that they put a box inside a box when really, a label would suffice.

I’ve bought a few things online recently because we’ve been at home for a good week and full of the cold (don’t worry it’s just THE COLD!) so it’s been difficult to get out and about to buy many boxes and boxes of toilet roll – I jest!

So online shopping has been a bit of a saviour. However, the amount of things I’ve bought that are already in a box and then been put in a bigger box with lots of paper stuffing it out is just ridiculous!

I get that logos and labelling etc are important for marketing purposes for big companies but I’m really considering stopping using Amazon and similar companies who do the same if they don’t come up with something a bit less wasteful. I reckon I could build a small house with the amount of cardboard that has passed my front door recently. So come on Amazon – get your act together and your packaging!
