Failed robber gave himself up to police

A KNIFE-WIELDING robber who tried to hold up a newsagents walked into a police station minutes after the raid to give himself up.

Nordine Afia, 31, told officers he was surrendering because “it was the right thing to do”.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday, Afia, an inmate at Saughton Prison, was jailed for 32 months for the attempted robbery and another three months for heroin possession.

He previously pleaded guilty to the failed robbery, which took place on November 12 last year.

Fiscal depute Karon Rollo told the court that Afia had gone into Capital Newsagents in Clerk Street and pointed a knife at Jamila Ahmed. She refused to give him any cash and Afia fled empty-handed.

Shortly afterwards, Afia walked into St Leonard’s police station and said he was responsible for an attempted robbery.

Afia told officers he had disposed of the knife round the corner and they recovered it.
