Fashion: Modern mod

It’s time to take the scooter out for a spin and salute one of fashion’s finest movements in style history.

It’s the return of the mod. This classic 1960s look is steeped in strong British design heritage with brands such as Fred Perry and Ben Sherman creating the backdrop to some crisp and precise dressing.

This is about dressing up both genders, with the guys being catered to a little better than the girls for once.

The twist this time around is that the classic 60s look has had a bit of a makeover itself by being merged with another two decades notorious for their own strong style aesthetic.

There’s a nod to the 1980s and the Mod Father himself, Mr Paul Weller, with the return of super skinny suits. However, this time it’s being edged out with the introduction of some 90s Brit Pop magic. That comes in the form of the furry hooded parka. Pair the two together and you’ve nailed the trend that is being dubbed “New Mod”.

The high street is heaving with this new sweep of nostalgia and there are a few simple steps to take to make sure you’re on the right track.

For the ladies, geometric knit ponchos and classic shift dresses in bold block colours are the way to go. Pop a pair of thick black opaque tights on with dresses for a style steal straight from the 60s. Clunky boots with figure-hugging clothes create a fashion juxtaposition that screams mod. For a style reference think 60s underground icon Edie Sedgwick or Vicky McClure’s character in This Is England.

For the fellas, there are several mod options out there. The most iconic look is the classic skinny suit. Get it in any shade of grey to re-create some Quadrophenia moments. Fear not if the body isn’t quite in skinny suit shape as there are several looks to tap into should you fancy a bash at New Mod.

Try letting old British brands like Fred Perry and Ben Sherman back into your life, it’s time to reclaim them back from the Ned as the polo shirt and light sports jacket are quintessential Mod looks. If you opt for this look, place a beige chino on bottom to balance the whole thing out. Then finally for the boys, classic 501s teamed with a nautical T-shirt will work, pop a tartan scarf on top to give it a little mod oomph.

This look is designed to make you appear dressed up even if you are having a down day. It is suited and booted with a lot of skin tight clothing. I promise if you give it a whirl you’ll be hooked.
