Princes Street remains closed for a second day while the area is made safe

Firefighters were called back to the former Debenhams store on Princes Street on Friday evening after reports of “smouldering wood”.

On Friday morning, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they had left the scene after more than 24 hours dealing with a major blaze which broke out within the premises just before 3am on Thursday.

But fire crews were called back to the street just over five hours later at around 5.11pm, following reports of some “smouldering wood” within the structure of the building.

Two fire appliances were deployed to deal with the small fire, and left a short time later.

Princes Street remains closed for a second day while the area is made safe.

At the height of the incident, around 50 firefighters, six fire appliances, two high reach appliances and additional specialist resources were mobilised.

A joint investigation with Police Scotland into the cause of the fire is now underway.
