Fire-damaged Bike Station has reopened

A charity bike shop in Edinburgh has reopened to the public, more than seven months after a fire ripped through its premises causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Renovation work was carried out at the The Bike Station in Causewayside after a successful crowdfunding campaign saw members of the public donate £16,000 to rebuild the facility.

The shop floor and office space have been repaired and renovated, with more space for adults and children’s refurbished second-hand bikes.

There is also a dedicated area for the charity’s Fix Your Own Bike sessions, where members of the public can learn about bike maintenance with the help of mechanics and volunteers.

Cash from the crowdfunding campaign was also used to help The Bike Station team restart their maintenance workshops in their temporary warehouse home.

Staff member Jenny Baker said: ”It has been a long time coming. We have had a pretty rough winter but with all the support from the public, the successful crowdfunder and all the well wishes we have received, the staff have kept their spirits up. It’s a testament to them that we are doing so well. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back in.”

Manager of The Bike Station Steve Hynd added “Thankfully due to the amazing support of the public and the outstanding work of the staff, we are very happy to announce the opening of the refurbished new look Bike Station on the 16th of May. We thoroughly look forward to welcoming everyone and thank you all again for your support.”
