Firms facing stricter fines

City leaders have promised tough action against utility firms which fail to properly repair road surfaces after work on underground networks.

Edinburgh City Council transport committee agreed to ask the Scottish Road Works Commissioner for greater powers to fine firms. At present fines can be as low as £33.

Councillor Ian Perry said: “Only when the fines are
substantial enough to make them take notice will this
problem be addressed.”
