Mr Aikman, 31, has Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and has dedicated his life to raising funds for research into the condition.

Earlier this week he revealed that he had smashed his original £500,000 target.

He shared the award with fellow MND patient, 21-year-old Lucy Lintott from Moray.

Mr Aikman, from Meadowbank, said: “I could not have done this alone. I am immensely grateful to everybody who has got behind my campaign, including all of Scotland’s party leaders who have united on this issue.

“Our next challenge is to ensure pre-election promises are kept, starting with the creation of three research PhDs into MND. The sooner they start, the sooner we can find a cure and start saving lives.”
