The announcement came as Greggs reported a 5.2 per cent rise in sales and profits of £73 million – up from £58.3m the previous year.

Owen Thompson, SNP MP for Midlothian, said: “I’m incredibly disappointed that Greggs have taken this decision. The closure of the Loanhead bakery will be felt by our community and impact on the Midlothian economy – 107 jobs is a huge blow.

“I’ve written to Greggs urging them to reconsider this decision and have also contacted Midlothian Council to ensure all available support is available.”

A Greggs spokesperson said: “Wherever possible we would look to offer alternative employment but, due to the location of our sites, we anticipate that unfortunately many will leave the business.”
