Coastguard launch heroic rope rescue to save young person stranded on East Lothian cliff

A multi-agency response was launched to rescue the young person from a ledge on Monday evening.

A young person has been rescued by the coastguard after becoming stuck on a cliff ledge 25 metres off the ground in North Berwick.

Volunteers from the local coastguard team said they were alerted by the fire service at around 7.15pm on Monday evening to reports of a young person stranded on a cliff at North Berwick Law, the volcanic hill that overlooks the coastal town.

A multi-agency operation was launched, with fire and coastguard crews working together to set up a rope rescue system to reach the ledge.

The young person was secured in a harness before being lowered to safety. They were not injured in the incident.

The volunteers commended the young person for “remaining calm” throughout the ordeal and calling for help rather than risk a self-rescue.

A spokesperson from the North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team said: “This incident is a prime example of the interagency team work that happens on a daily basis within the emergency services, sharing skills, experience and assets to help others.

“If you see someone or something on the water, coastline or harbours that you are concerned about, don’t delay, call 999 and as for Coastguard.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been approached for comment.
