Hop, skip and jump to see train junk athlete

A LIFE-SIZED sculpture of triple jump world record-holder Jonathan Edwards will be displayed at Waverley station in the build-up to the Olympics.

The sculpture, immortalising Edwards when he paraded a Union flag after winning gold at the Sydney 2000 Games, is made of used train parts, including brake pads, springs, seat frames and bolts.

Weighing 770lb, the sculpture took two weeks to build, with all parts sourced from East Coast’s engineering depots.

It was unveiled yesterday at London’s King’s Cross station and will go on a tour of Britain, ending up at Waverley from June 26 until July 4.

Edwards said: “The sculpture is very striking and really took me aback when I saw it.”
