Inmates’ cell phone block

MOBILE phone signal blockers could be installed in Scottish prisons in an effort to prevent inmates running criminal enterprises from behind bars.

The Scottish Parliament’s justice committee was today discussing handing prison chiefs the power to install the technology, which could cost
£1 million per prison.

Nearly 1000 handsets and 800 mobile phone components were seized in prisons last year.

The blockers would stop the phone signal getting through and also identify the location it came from.
