A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: “The victim was attacked after he went to the assistance of the shop’s security guard who was trying to deal with two members of the public who were remonstrating with him and, on doing so, they turned their attention to the young man when he intervened.

“In a totally unprovoked attack, this man received a serious facial injury. We are appealing for anyone who witnessed this vicious assault or has any information to contact us.”

The two suspects, who are both white and believed to be in their early 20s, made off south along Nicolson Street.

The first is described as stocky, 5ft 8in and wearing a dark top and jeans, Timberland-style boots and a woolly hat.

The second is of slim build, with short dark hair, about 5ft 10in tall, wearing a grey top and jeans.
