Jenny Dawe reassures councillors over tram project problems

CITY leader Jenny Dawe has insisted there are no “insuperable” problems that have emerged with the tram project since work restarted.

The Lib Dem councillor said she was “delighted” to be able to take a short trip on a tram during a recent photocall at the newly-opened Gogar depot, where she said Lothian Buses drivers were also “hugely enthusiastic” about their training on the tram.

She told a meeting of the full council: “I am pleased to report no insuperable problems since the new arrangements with the contractor have been agreed.”

The depot will be home to the entire tram fleet and will act as the network control centre when the service goes live in 2014.

It is fully electrified and testing has been taking place for the last week on five trams.

Working relations with the construction consortium headed by German firm Bilfinger Berger have markedly improved since the project was brought “in-house” by the city council.
