Knife killer is jailed for nine years

A KILLER who stabbed an Australian journalist in a row over a woman has been jailed for nine years.

Kyle Montgomery followed his victim out into the night armed with a bread knife and stabbed him in the chest during a scuffle.

Thomas Allwood, 55, who had returned to Scotland to put on a show at the Fringe, died within minutes. The blade pierced his lung and severed an artery near his heart. Montgomery, 24, from Winchburgh, West Lothian, had denied murdering Mr Allwood, 55, during the incident in nearby Broxburn.

However, he was convicted of culpable homicide after a week-long jury trial at the High Court in Livingston.

Passing sentence yesterday, judge Lord Doherty said he took full account of the fact that Mr Allwood, above, had started the fight and had to be ejected twice from Montgomery’s father’s home.

He said: “You were not acting in self-defence. The stabbing was not done under provocation. After you had stabbed him you made no attempt to obtain assistance for your victim. I regard your culpability for the killing as being high.”
