Lanark Road fire: Pictures show crews tackling 'well developed' fire at Edinburgh nursery

Pictures show fire crews tackling a blaze at a nursery in the Capital.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called after smoke was seen billowing from Lanark Road Nursery at about 7.20am on Wednesday morning.

Parents and guardians have been assured that no one was injured in the incident.

Crews were on the scene for about nine hours and left at about 3.50pm after the “well developed” fire was extinguished.

A SFRS spokesman said: “Operations control were alerted at 7.19am on 5 May to reports of a building fire on Lanark Road, Edinburgh.

“Operations control mobilised six pumps, a high reach appliance and a water carrier. crews left the scene at 3.51pm after fighting a well developed fire within a roof space.

"There were no reported casualties however Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance.”

It was confirmed the nursery remained closed throughout the day as emergency services dealt with the fire.

Andrew Johnston, Tory councillor for Fountainbridge/Craiglockhart, said parents had just been arriving at the nursery to drop off their children but he did not think there had been any children in the building when the fire broke out.

"Thankfully no-one has been hurt, I don't think, but it's obviously a huge blow to the community that rely on the nursery.

Six appliances were called to the fire which happened in Lanark Road.

"Parents are standing out side not knowing what to do - so many of them will now not be able to go to work because their children would be getting looked after.

"The parents say they are just thankful no children have been hurt, but by the sale of the blaze they don't think the building will be salvageable."

Onlooker Roxanne Kinnear said: "I was stopped in traffic coming back from the gym and saw this huge cloud of smoke coming from the nursery. There were a lot of fire people at work tackling it.

"I know a few mums with children there and they had luckily had an email confirming the nursery was closed due to the fire and that no one was hurt, which is such a relief as it could have been devastating."
