Latest Edinburgh planning applications submitted to the council - including new AI data centre and new nursery

Here is your weekly round-up of the latest planning applications submitted to the City of Edinburgh Council.

Among the new proposals submitted to the local authority this week are planned alterations to a university research building, plans for a new nursery in Bruntsfield,and a flat extension and new cafe in the Old Town.

There are also applications to install water tanks at an Edinburgh stadium, shop signage proposals and plans to build a large new AI date centre campus. While permission has also been sought for a seasonal event at Edinburgh Zoo.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland applied to the council's planning department on August 8 for permission for an event to be hosted within the grounds of Edinburgh Zoo called 'Edinburgh Zoo's Giant Lanterns', which will be in-situ over winter from November 14, 2025 - February 22, 2026. This is a lights trail event with lantern structures of varying size made from steel with painted silks covering lights within. The structures are situated along a 1km route of the lower part of the zoo to form a route guests walk round, with stops for catering opportunities. Images of previous lantern events at the zoo are pictured above.

Forbes Nursery applied to the council's planning department on August 12 for a change of use for 8 Bruntsfield Terrace from private residential to nursery. The proposals would see some minor internal alterations to the property, including the removal of three walls and sliding doors installed. If approved, the new nursery would provide two playrooms for kids over three-years-old on the ground floor, and two playrooms for children under three on the first floor.
