Leader: '˜Do we really need Sunday charges at all?'

SO Sunday parking charges now look certain. The latest proposal '“ to charge from 1pm and allow church-goers to continue to avoid fees '“ will placate some of the criticisms, although may also lead to a few rushed sermons.

But the question will remain – do we really need Sunday charges at all? And the accusation that it is simply a cash cow for the council will be difficult to escape.

The argument is that Sunday can now be treated as any other shopping day and that there is no reason to treat it any differently when it comes to parking. The city council may also point to problems with parking and congestion on a Sunday, although anecdotally this does not seem to stack up.

Many city centre retailers may well take issue here.

Currently, Sunday is the one day when shops in the city centre can take on the out of town centres and their masses of free parking.

It encourages families to come into town, to wander at ease, perhaps grab a bite to eat and all without having to panic about 
Edinburgh’s enforcers circling their vehicle.

The proof will be in the parking but the council must be prepared to reverse the decision if there is a negative impact on footfall and trade in the city centre.
