Loanhead Gala strengthened by family ties

Chiara is excited by being chosen and is particularly looking forward to taking part in the procession in her horse-drawn carriage.

A keen Highland dancer, Chiara also lists reading amongst her interests.

Chiara’s family have a long tradition of involvement in the Loanhead celebrations.

Her sister Rhea was a Lady in Waiting in 2012, her cousin Alana was Mistress of the Robes in 2001 and her aunt Cathleen was Britannia in 1990.

Chiara’s mum Cherie said she was delighted with her daughter’s selection, stating that she “grew up in Loanhead and is fully aware of what a great honour it is to be selected as Queen”.

Herald is 11-year-old  Connor Finlayson also of St Margaret’s School.

Connor has previous experience of the crowning ceremony, having been a page boy three years ago.

He will be joined on stage this year by his younger brother Lewis, who is one of this year’s page boys.

A keen footballer, who plays for Edinburgh South, Connor said that “it will be a huge honour to represent the school as this year’s Herald”.

Connor’s mum Sandra is very proud of Connor’s achievement and added: “It will be extra special with both sons being involved.”

Crowning the Gala Queen at the Fountain Green ceremony is Mrs Linda Heggie, the deputy head at Paradykes Primary School. Mrs Heggie has enjoyed a teaching career spanning 38 years at the school. Having been brought up in a mining village, Linda has always felt an affinity with the Loanhead community.

She is delighted to have been given the opportunity to be Crowning Lady and particularly appreciates the way in which Loanhead Gala values every child.

This year’s festivities will start on Friday, June 17 with the carnival parade of decorated floats and walking groups in fancy dress. There will be a week of activities leading up to the gala day.
