One witness stated: “It went from just smoke to big flames bursting out of one of the windows, but very quickly after that the smoke started to dissipate.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 8.20pm on Wednesday, June 10 to reports of a fire within a flat on Stewart Terrace, Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and one height appliance to the scene, where crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished a fire within a third-floor flat of a four-storey tenement block.

"One male casualty suffering from smoke inhalation was given oxygen therapy at the scene by firefighters, before being handed into the care of paramedics and transported to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

"Crews ensured there was no fire spread within the building, and that the area was safe.

"The final appliance left the scene at 10.25pm."
