Midlothian high school stink bombs and water pistols causing 'serious disruption' during exams period

Staff believe 30 bottles of ‘stink spray’ are circulating at the high school with people and possessions being targeted around the campus

Pupils bringing stink bombs and water pistols into a Midlothian high school are causing 'serious disruption' during the current exam period.

St David’s High in Dalkeith has had several incidents involving stink sprays and water pistols being brought into school and sprayed on people and possessions around the campus.

The school has said that it believes around 30 bottles of ‘stink spray’ are circulating in the school and have already confiscated several bottles.

The depute headteacher Mr Martin also said that any pupils found in possession of these items will face whole school sanctions and “parents will be notified as a matter of urgency”.

In a letter sent to parents of pupils at St David’s, seen by the Evening News, Mr Martin emphasised that such items are prohibited from the school and are causing serious safety concerns.

He said: “The spray has caused serious disruption to teaching and learning and has also disrupted our SQA exams, which is extremely distressing for those pupils involved.

“The water pistols are also causing significant disruption across the school day and can also be a particularly serious safety concern as on several occasions they have been sprayed on school buses.

“We ask that all parents emphasise the message that these water pistols and stink sprays are completely unacceptable and must not be brought into school.”

When approached for comment, head teacher Catherine Jackson condemned the actions of the culprits and said such incidents would not be tolerated.

She said: “It’s been happening today so we sent out the letter as the most efficient and proactive way to nip this in the bud because we’re not tolerating any disruptions to teaching and learning, particularly when the SQA exams are on.”
