Missing dog found more than 200 miles away - on Cramond Beach

It was an epic canine odyssey that has seen him described as Scotland's answer to the Littlest Hobo.

This plucky Yorkshire Terrier went missing from Orkney earlier this week – and was then found more than 200 miles away on Cramond Beach.

Tom’s adventures remain shrouded in mystery and it is still unclear whether he boarded a vehicle leaving the island or was snatched by dognappers.

The five-year-old pooch vanished from kennels while his owners who were on an exotic Mediterranean cruise.

But he was identified in the Capital thanks to a microchip and has now been returned to the Durrand family.

Tom enjoyed a brief stay at the Edinburgh Cat and Dog home before a relative of the owners came to collect him.

Kieran Robson, of the Seafield Road-based centre, said: “Tom is a brilliant wee dog.

“It would be amazing if he could tell us his story because we’d definitely love to hear it.

“We hope his family will be able to relax and enjoy the rest of their holiday now that they know he is safe.

“This just goes to show how valuable micro-chipping your pets can be.

“Your local vet can help and if anyone out there is interested in giving another amazing animal a happy ending to their own story we’d love to help.”

David Lockhart, of the Cat and Dog Home, said staff there had been speculating about how Tom may have ended up on the sands at Cramond.

He said: “Was he here for the festival?

“Had he heard about the quality of our food?

“We don’t know. We’ve asked him but he’s not giving anything away.

“Sadly the most likely explanation is that someone tried to steal him and thought better of it but there’s no way to know.

“We prefer to think of him as Scotland’s own ‘Littlest Hobo’ who has found his way to Edinburgh after lots of adventure and good deeds.

Dougie Durrand drove all the way to Edinburgh from just south of John O’Groats to collect the him yesterday.

He said: “Everyone is relieved and delighted that Tom is safe.

“I’d like to say a big thanks to the team here for looking after him.

“We’d love to know what really happened but maybe it’s another great Scottish mystery.”

Along with his brother, Tom is the pride of the Durrand family.

Tom was reported missing on Tuesday and was found on Thursday.

A year ago, two pets from England mysteriously ended up in the Lothians in the same week.

A Staffordshire bull terrier from Stoke-on-Trent named Tyson was found tied up outside a Midlothian supermarket while a terrified cat named Misty from Sheffield was found in a block of flats in Merchiston – each 250 miles from their registered homes.
