Motorists warned of Edinburgh emergency road closure ahead of rush hour on major route
Edinburgh street closed for emergency gasworks
Motorists have been warned to avoid an emergency road closure this afternoon on a key route in and out of Edinburgh, which had already been hit by roadworks.
SGN announced at 2.09pm on Tuesday, September 1 that they would have to close Cramond Road South in Davidson’s Mains from 3pm today for ongoing emergency gas repairs, after previously placing temporary traffic lights there.
The closure is at the Tesco exit north of the Main Street/ Quality Street roundabout.
A signed diversion will be in place for northbound motorists via Main Street, Ferry Road, Pennywell Road, Muirhouse Parkway, Silverknowes Parkway, Lauriston Farm Road and back on to Cramond Road South. This diversion is reversed for southbound motorists.

An SGN spokesperson said: “We’re continuing emergency gas network repairs on Cramond Road South, between the Silverknowes and Davidson's Mains areas of Edinburgh.
“Unfortunately, we need to temporarily close Cramond Road South from 3pm today at the exit for Tesco, just north of the roundabout where Cramond Road South meets Main Street and Quality Street.
“We had hoped to continue our work using temporary traffic lights, but to protect the safety of road users around our works we now need to close the road.
“We understand that this is a busy and sensitive route and apologise for any disruption caused.”
AA Traffic News is currently reporting extensive delays in and around Davidson’s Mains due to this road closure, affecting the key route of Queensferry Road in and out of Edinburgh.
Lothian bus services 47 and 47B have been impacted, see here for diversions.
Speaking about how long the closure could remain in place, the spokesperson added: “Our engineers are working as quickly and safely as possible to complete these urgent and essential repairs, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of the local community.
“At this stage it's still too early to confirm when our work will be complete. We'll provide further updates as soon as we're able.”
