Music festival brings folk memories flooding back

AN upcoming music festival will be a celebration of 60 years of the Scottish folk revival.

The week-long Carrying Stream, which runs from November 9, is Edinburgh Folk Club’s annual celebration of the life and work of Hamish Henderson, and will feature an anniversary concert commemorating the first People’s Festival Ceilidh in 1951.

The concert, at the ceilidh’s original venue of Oddfellow’s Hall in Forrest Road, will be headlined by Phil Cunningham, with Ewan McVicar as compere. Performers will include Sheila Stewart, Jean Redpath, Margaret Bennett and Jock Duncan.

Other festival events include Will Kaufman’s Woody Guthrie show Hard Times and Hard Travellin, and a gala concert of tutors and students from the School of Scottish Studies and the Royal Scottish Academy.

Owen Dudley Edwards will give the Hamish Henderson Lecture on the subject of sectarian songs on November 12 in the City Chambers.
