Navy memorial unveiled

An exhibition celebrating the 1000-year history of the Merchant Navy service is set to be opened today at Edinburgh’s Nelson Monument.

Lord Provost George Grubb and Rear Admiral Roger Lockwood will unveil the memorial plaque that is to form the centrepiece of the new permanent exhibition on National Merchant Navy Day.

Councillor Grubb said: “Both the plaque and the new exhibition will play an important role in remembering British Merchant Navy personnel.

“Their astounding bravery and courage has left a marked impression on this country and so it is only right that we remember their contribution in this way.”

The display will stand adjacent to the Battle of Trafalgar exhibition.
