“It tests your leadership but you can really make a big difference and you can influence at lot and certainly at Armadale, we moved the school forward a lot.

“Lasswade is in a much better place but I am still looking to keep it moving forward and making sure we keep improving our exam results and the quality of the student experience and that includes what happens in the school - the trips, the clubs, the music, the sport.

“It is important that it is as positive as it can be and it motivates the children to do well and realise they need to work hard to succeed.”

Mr Hornell continued: “I have been really welcomed into the school. The staff are brilliant. They are really enthusiastic and work really hard. The children are absolutely amazing. There have been lots of positive experiences so far.

“We did our Sports Personality of the Year Award ceremony in my second week. It was oustanding and this week we had the youth Philanthropic Initiative.

“They are brilliant students in this school. We have great support from the parent council as well, a suportive bunch, who want to do stuff to help the school.”
