OAP killed in blaze named

THE pensioner killed during a blaze at a sheltered housing complex can today be named as Ian Thomson.

Mr Thomson, 69, died hours after he was pulled from a fire at his flat in Bield Housing Association in Thorntree Street, off Easter Road, last Tuesday night. He had suffered severe burns to his body.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but it is thought it could have been a cigarette.

Emergency services rushed to the property at 7.30pm after being alerted by a member of staff who heard the smoke alarm. An automatic fire alarm was also triggered but no attempt to rescue the man had been made before fire crews arrived.
