Off-duty firefighters and police save crash man

TWO firearms officers and two off-duty firefighters have been nominated for an award after they used a heart-start machine to save the life of a driver whose car crashed on Queensferry Road last week.

The 70-year-old man suffered cardiac arrest and his Volvo left the road and hit a lamppost.

The firefighters saw the collision and stopped to give the man CPR.

Then two constables on routine patrol in an Armed Response Vehicle heard the call and raced to the scene.

They continued first aid and used their defibrillator on the man until an ambulance arrived.

The man was taken to hospital and continues to recover following this incident. Two female passengers who were also in the car suffered minor injuries.

Chief Superintendent Elaine Ferguson, Specialist Services Commander, said: “Thanks to their swift response and the vital actions of the off-duty firefighters, the treatment they administered saved the driver’s life.”
