Boris Johnson’s disastrous Brexit is just pushing Scots towards independence – Angus Robertson

Boris Johnson’s threat to re-open with Withdrawal Agreement with the EU increases the chance of a no-deal Brexit, which would boost support for Scottish independence, writes Angus Robertson.

Boris Johnson is threatening the European Union by saying he will shoot himself and the UK in the foot. As time runs out to reach a trade agreement, the British Government is warning it will legislate to overturn parts of the Withdrawal Agreement signed only last year by the UK. This includes the critical Northern Ireland protocol, which is aimed at securing stability and peace in Northern Ireland.

In a move signalling that the UK cannot be trusted to stand by its own international obligations, it’s an example that Britannia will always, always waive the rules. It all seems so far away from the overblown claims of ‘Global Britain’ and an ‘oven-ready deal’ with the EU. Instead it’s more like petulant Little Brexit Britain which can’t get its own way, threatening to throw its toys out of the pram.

The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has reacted by saying: “I trust the British government to implement the Withdrawal Agreement, an obligation under international law & prerequisite for any future partnership. Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland is essential to protect peace and stability on the island & integrity of the single market.”

Meanwhile the risks of a no-deal hard Brexit grow by the day as the deadline approaches. Brexit has been the biggest single reason why there is now a clear majority of people in Scotland who support Scottish independence.

Next year’s Scottish Parliament elections will give the public the chance to vote on Boris Johnson’s disastrous Brexit and to move towards independence instead.
