I was delighted to instigate the first meeting of the government’s Scottish Connections Advisory Panel, made up of experts to provide guidance on priorities, opportunities and specific initiatives to engage with Scotland’s diaspora around the world.

The group brings together expertise that reflects diverse geographies and relationships to Scotland and looks across the wide range of Scottish Government responsibilities and priorities, ensuring that we will be as effective as possible in delivering on key policies internationally.

It is centred around three main areas: Economic, trade, and investment initiatives; addressing climate change, preserving biodiversity and promoting renewable energy; enhancing reputation, influence, and relationships.

The group consists of Kim Atkinson, Scottish Sports Association; Rebecca Brooks, Scottish Tourism Alliance; Professor Tanja Bueltmann, University of Strathclyde; Fran Hegyi, Edinburgh International Festival; Ian Houston, GlobalScot; Billy Kay, Writer and Broadcaster; Mark Kent, Scotch Whisky Association; Professor Murray Leith, University of the West of Scotland, Claire McPherson, Universities Scotland; Andrew, Viscount Dunrossil, the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs; Professor Murray Pittock, University of Glasgow and the Scottish Council of Global Affairs; and Lolita Jackson, GlobalScot and SDCL Group.

Scotland punches well above its weight on the international stage. This framework and our expert group will seize the opportunity to engage our diaspora population further which, in turn, will bring greater economic and cultural engagement with our nation and will further expand our global reach.
