Golf wins another convert as my son digs up the garden for his new passion – Hayley Matthews

We were scratching our heads on what our nine-year-old could do over Easter that would be fun, different and get him off the computer.

With trampoline places still closed as well as all the other indoor places full of fun and excitement, we were left feeling at a loss.

Then my dad came up with a suggestion of golf. A kids golfing course for a few hours a day over the Easter holidays. We instantly took up the offer and our son was excited at the prospect of something new.

Each day it's been slightly different and despite the bitter cold and gusty winds, he's been loving it. Loving it so much, that on a recent trip to Poundsavers for some pocket money toys, we came across a golf club and ball set.

Just a wee light plastic one, but still a pretty decent replica of the real iron. So out we were in the back garden in all the elements pretending to pitch and put.

On my nine-year-old asking me for a spoon, I didn't think twice and handed him a huge soup spoon, only to find 25 minutes later, a massive hole had been dug in the middle of the garden – for practising golf obviously.

It was strategically placed so that both he and his dad could play from either end. The garden looks like the Time Team have set about it, but do you know what? I don't care, it's just grass and my son has found his thing!
