Hutchison Vale is a ‘wee club with a big heart’ – Steve Cardownie

Councillor Cathy Fullerton gave the speech below at full council when proposing Hutchison Vale FC be given a civic reception to mark its 80th anniversary. What a pity that only four out of 62 councillors attended the event, held last Friday, writes Steve Cardownie.

“Lord Provost, I am pleased to present this motion to Council. Hutchie Vale is an institution. It was formed in 1940 to provide opportunities for boys from the Hutchison area and its surrounding communities to play the game. Today the club is based in Ford’s Road in Saughton and is surrounded by some of the most deprived and challenged communities in this our capital city.

Between 400 and 500 boys and girls now play for the Hutchie Vale in 20 teams ranged from under tens to under 20s. They also have a thriving junior academy for children between five and eight and more than 30 volunteer coaches across all age groups.

The Club has very high standards and has an enviable track record of bringing players through its youth set up into the professional game. It instills in its children a belief in themselves and the power of teamwork, discipline, respect and good conduct. Children from all walks of life are treated equally and inclusively.

Finally, Lord Provost, credit must also be paid to Tam Smith, the club leader. For the last 33 years, he has dedicated all his time to the club. His kind manner and approachable nature has made the club what it is today. Tam became leader after the previous club leader ‘Ma’ Bryson was given an indefinite ban for abusing the referee!

Quite an accolade for this wee club with a big heart.”
