Jamie Neish: Open city to catch some classic films

IT’S June and movies are taking over the Capital. In a few short weeks, the 69th Edinburgh International Film Festival will bring an eclectic line-up of films from around the world to the city. But first, it’s time to play host to an array of outdoor screenings under the scheme Film in the City.

Taking place over the next two weekends, the event offers the opportunity to watch some classic films in the open air.

And, with temperatures looking to climb as the weekend approaches, it should be clear skies all the way. Nothing is more magical than watching a film under the stars.

Film in the City kicks off on Saturday with Happy Feet and continues through to 14 June, with films such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Brave, Grease and Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists all set to be shown.

The screenings will happen at two areas: the Grassmarket on the first weekend and St Andrew Square on the second. Enormous popcorn tubs have already been positioned across the city to build an early buzz.

No money will be needed, as all the screenings are free. All you need to do is turn up and marvel at the cinematic treats unravelling on the big screens.

It’s recommended that you arrive early to save yourself a good spot. And probably best that you bring an umbrella because everyone knows how unpredictable Scottish weather can be.

Edinburgh has always positioned itself as a city of culture - film, in particular. And now as the festivals start, it’s time for that to come into view.
