Stop withdrawal of vital ATMs - Steve Cardownie

George Gordon, SNP Councillor in the Forth Ward of the city, is currently heading up a campaign to prevent the withdrawal of an ATM in his area by the TSB.

He has had meetings with interested parties and has written to the bank along with other local politicians , encouraging them to reconsider this move which they believe will have an impact on their constituents.

In the letter George points out that the ATM, situated at the local post office in Boswall Drive (where the ATM is situated) is crucial to many families in the area. He writes when referring to the PO, “This is a well used community facility and the ATM is a primary part of that since the closure of the Post Office at Crewe Road North.

It makes no sense to remove this facility for such a high catchment area which contains people in areas of multi-deprivation and an older, aging population and given that we have had the closure of four banks in Goldenacre and now the closure of the TSB in Boswall Parkway, we feel that this is very short sighted and will have a very harmful effect on the communities that we serve.”

He points out that other ATMs are not easily accessible particularly for older or infirm residents who still rely on cash for everyday commodities and are not yet comfortable with card transactions for groceries etc.

The TSB have sought to justify their position, citing usage figures, but politicians point out that the demographics of the area have been paid scant regard and the bank ought to reconsider it’s position-it just might do so.
