The Bundesliga is back and football fans across the country have been deciding who they should support in the top-flight of German football.

Glory hunters can opt for Bayern Munich who are going for their eighth title, fellow giants Borussia Dortmund or relative newcomers RB Leipzig. Top six contenders also include Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04.

Other considerations might be the club’s players and style of play, history or kit colour. Hibs fans could opt for Werder Bremen who play in green, whilst Hearts fans could opt for FC Nurnberg whose strips come closest to maroon. Given the Tynecastle relegation woes, perhaps Hamburger SV are worth watching in Bundesliga II. Before their recent relegation HSV were the only top-flight side to have played in every season of the Bundesliga since its foundation. They are well placed to come back this year.

While the stadiums were empty for the first Bundesliga matches of the lockdown this past weekend, there was huge interest from football fans around the world. My father-in-law’s adopted team Cologne were held to a 2-2 draw by Mainz, while my side Eintracht Frankfurt lost 3-1 to Monchengladbach.

Hopefully German football can show the way that we can emerge from the lockdown and see some live team sport in Scotland with all necessary public health safeguards.
