Wedding bells chime for my daughter Katy - Karen Koren

My gorgeous daughter Katy got married in Edinburgh at the weekend and what a glorious occasion it was. The day was just magical – I’ve never been the mother of the bride and it felt very special.

My son married many years ago and it was a beautiful traditional wedding in Elgin Cathedral and as the mother of the groom I didn’t make a speech as it's only the father of the bride’s prerogative. At Katy’s wedding not only did I make a speech but I was also the master of ceremonies.

The day started early with hair and makeup ladies arriving at 8 am. There were two bridesmaids, my granddaughter and Katy’s best friend as the Maid of Honour. We had a lovely morning toasting with pink champagne and dressing at the last minute so as not to spoil our outfits.

The marriage took place at the City Chambers in the High Street, transport was a vintage white cab! The sun shone and the cabbie played “Chapel of Love” by the Dixie Cups while driving to the Registry Office. The City Chambers is a perfect place to get married as the car drives into the little square and it feels majestic!

The wedding ceremony was moving as the bridesmaids went first and I walked Katy down the little aisle where the groom Fredrik was waiting, extremely nervous with tears in his eyes. Afterwards we all went out into the High Street and threw confetti all over the happy couple. (strictly forbidden within the City Chambers square)

Lots of photography followed and a coach took us to the Shore in Leith where we had pink champagne and more photos. The restaurant was decorated beautifully, the food was delicious. My grandson Finn and granddaughter Lily played and sang songs which added to the atmosphere.

We then all took another coach up to Summerhall and had a wedding party in the Dissection Room. A further 80 friends joined us and I gave my speech which I was incredibly nervous about. Thankfully it went well, Katy and Fredrik also gave speeches. Then I announced first dance which was to Sunshine on Leith – everyone joined in and a message was sent from the Proclaimers wishing Katy and Fredrik all the best for their future. It was the most perfect day.
