Why Harry and Meghan were right to move – Helen Martin

WHEN we all need a distraction from serious issues such as coronavirus, job losses, Brexit, climate change, pollution and other miseries, we can probably turn to Harry and Meghan.

Their mysterious biography, produced without any contribution from them, and their movement out of the UK, their activities filmed in the US, and their new home surrounded by the famous in Santa Barbara, is inevitably going to turn into movies or a TV series.

Especially in the States there has been dramatisation of the royal family, and there’s the potential some day of Prince Andrew and, of course, Harry and Meghan, performed by similar looking actors.

The UK remains divided as to whether the couple had to opt out of Royal life because of her suffering from racism “disapproval”, or because Meghan expected marrying a Prince would result in a wonderful life despite having been advised it would be tough.

With no likely access to the throne, they would have lived as second-rate royals. But as part of The Firm they’d have to do as they were told when it came to public duties and tours, and forbidden to make speeches or campaigns that were not approved by The Family.

Personally, I think for both Meghan and Harry, the switch to the US was better for both. She is a campaigner, and as an American actress previously, it’s normal that she enjoys centre-of-attention projects and fame. Both she and Harry will be seen as celebrities in the US, which is very different from being seen as Royals in the UK. And they will be independent rather than controlled by the monarchy. It was a wise move.
