Comment: Long may Gorgie City Farm stay open

In just over a week, a staggering £60,000 has been raised.

From seven-year-old Jessica McCleary staging collections with her pals to local businesses getting on board, the call for help has been answered from across the city.

There is still a long way to go of course but we hope that all the community efforts along with the publicity will put the attraction on a more secure footing now and in the future.

It has also demonstrated, in case there was any doubt, what a valuable and appreciated resource Gorgie City Farm has been over the years.

It would be unthinkable for it to close and we very much hope that possibility is now looking highly unlikely.

The fundraising efforts since the news broke have been an example of all that is great about our city – a community pulling together for those in need.

Well done to all who have supported the cause so far and long may Gorgie City Farm stay open for business.

Honouring heroes

From the fantastic supporters of Gorgie City Farm to the every day heroes of Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Our judges have had a difficult task to whittle down the nominations for the Evening News Local Hero Awards from the hundreds of submissions.

Choosing between them is no easy task and all those nominated can feel rightly proud to have made the shortlist.

The winners will be announced at our annual glittering awards ceremony in the Assembly Rooms later this month with more details to follow on the event.

We hope they all enjoy their moment in the spotlight which has been richly deserved.
